The lives of Former First Wife Nancy Reagan and Retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor have been intertwined for many years. It was Nancy's Husband President Ronald Reagan who nominated Sandra to replace Potter Stewart in 1981 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate 99-0. Both Nancy and Sandra are strong and successful women who stood by their men throughout their entire lives through good times and bad. And they both have had to face seeing their husbands face the same illness: Alzheimer's. Nancy chose to keep Ronald out of the public eye, who made his last public speech on February 3, 1994. Sandra retired in January 2006 to take care of her husband who is suffering from Alzheimer's.

In a recent Associated Press story, John O'Connor, who was diagnosed with the disease in 1990, has been taken care of at the Huger Mercy Living Center. Sandra retired from the U.S. Supreme Court in order to take care of John. John, who has now lost much of his memory, has struck up a relationship with a fellow female Alzheimer's patient. Sandra, the strong, loving, and caring woman that she is, is not angry about this development. Instead, she understands that he has lost most of his memories and is content that John is happy, content, and comfortable in his twilight years.
